Bio:

“Nature gave us all something to fall back on, and sooner or later we all land flat on it.”

Qalamity was born in Sandport 53 years ago, the youngest of 5 siblings and half-siblings. Her mother, Xaqaren Faye, veered dangerously close to succumbing to the Bleaching for as long as Qalamity knew her. Xaqaran was troubled, prone to larceny and prostitution to cover the vices she always seemed to prioritize ahead of her children. None of the Faye kids were well-cared for or educated. Qalamity had it particularly tough as the youngest, who tried in vain to court her mother’s waning interest. To cope, Qalamity developed an appreciation for the tamed and wild creatures that were common around the settlement. Qalamity was alone among the Fayes in that she had the force of personality to communicate with animals as well as utilize a few innate magical tricks some gnomes retained from their First World heritage.

When Qalamity turned 16, Xaqaren succumbed. Her children, now orphaned, went their separate ways. Qalamity took one thing from her dead mother, an intricately carved wooden snuffbox. She traveled for a time with her next oldest sibling, an ill-mannered, sadistic half-spriggan named Qasserfast who lived as an outlaw and ran with various bandit gangs. Qasserfast grew to love his murderous lifestyle. Qalamity began to develop a cynical view of human and humanoid civilization, seeing it as rapacious and far less honest than the simple dynamics at play among animals.

Qasserfast and Qalamity wound up in a huge and infamous bandit gang named the Red Knuckle Rustlers who operated out of some decrepit desert ruins. They preyed on travelers and collected tribute in gold and blood from nearby settlements. While Qalamity was still too young and small to join in the fighting, her knack with beasts was put to use taming and training the raiders’ expanding herd of horses, camels, and other livestock. She quickly cultivated a reputation for breaking unruly mounts. Her minor magics were likewise utilized for domestic tasks that wound up working her from sunrise to sundown. As a result of this drudgery, Qalamity began to suffer the early effects of Bleaching at a very young age, and the adolescent gnome coped by turning to some of the same vices that destroyed her mother’s health.

The reign of the Red Knuckle Rustlers came to an end when Qalamity was 21. The camp was attacked by adventurers, most of the bandits and their leadership were put to the sword. The rest scattered, including Qasserfast. Qalamity was seen as a non-combatant and spared. The party ranger, an aged elf named Daeris, was impressed by the teenage gnome’s way with animals and decided to adopt her.

Daeris was the first true father figure Qalamity had, but their relationship was tumultuous. Daeris introduced Qalamity to his own clanmates, forest elves who dwelt on a volcanic island in the Ubluht Sea. These were devout worshipers of the Empyreal Lord Valani, a nature god known as the Fireshaker. Daeris was only semi-retired, and was often called away to quests by his adventuring companions. Qalamity got along with the highly principled elves as much as she got along with the murderous bandits—which is to say, hardly at all. To the austere elves, the gnome teenager was too rowdy, temperamental, and prone to fits, fabrications, and unbelievable flights of fancy. Again, she found solace among the beasts of the island and became fascinated by the cult of Valani’s teachings. Unfortunately, Qalamity was barely literate in Common and completely mystified by the Elvish tongue, so her understanding of their religion was largely colored by her own prejudices and wild imagination. She saw the faith as validating the simple honest truths found in the natural world. She likewise believed that the civilizations of intelligent beings had an unfair advantage and were causing it unnecessary harm.

As she approached her 45th birthday, Qalamity discovered an orphaned baby theropod dinosaur who took to following her when she fed it. She nicknamed it Gobble. As the allosaurus grew, Qalamity grew more attached to the animal and got it to accept her as a rider. Very occasionally, when she spoke to it with fey magic, the dinosaur appeared to say strange things above and beyond its simple animal understanding and environment—things regarding the end of the elves, portents hinting at increasing depredations on the natural world back on the mainland, and a sort of philosophical musing regarding the circle of life. An amazed Qalamity began to imagine Gobble as a messenger of Valani himself.

Qalamity got it in her head that the elves were doomed, and that the Fireshaker was soon about to wipe the island of life via its volcano. When next she saw her adopted father, Qalamity demanded to be returned to the place of her birth. Daeris readily agreed, and the island’s elves spared no tears, finally having rid themselves of the delinquent gnome and her tall tales.

As they said their farewells, Daeris admitted his regrets that he was not a better father and that he failed to have the impact he hoped he would when he first saw the vast potential in the “crude little bandit girl” he discovered in the Red Knuckle Rustlers’ camp. Qalamity had changed so little. As he watched his adopted daughter head off into the sunset, Daeris vowed to make amends.

Now 53, Qalamity has been back wandering the dusty frontiers of Thenro for a few years, generally making herself a nuisance to those who exploit and harm the wild wastes she has sworn to protect in the name of the Fireshaker. When she is not punishing miners, sport hunters, and ranchers, Qalamity can usually be found in smokey saloons drinking and gambling while regaling locals with exaggerated tales and thinly-veiled threats—habits that lead to brawls often enough. It is said that her adopted father’s influence and reputation have thus far kept the authorities from posting “wanted” notices bearing her likeness, but it is only a matter of time before Qalamity Faye picks a fight she cannot win.
